Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are a type of energy conversion and storage system that are known for their fuel flexibility, high efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
Metal-supported SOFC as a next generation fuel cell. In an increasing demand of renewable energy resources, fuel cell represents the highly efficient, clean and sustainable energy conversion source. Broadly speaking, fuel cell can be divided into six different categories according to the types of electrolyte and fuels used.
Hydrogen is a promising fuel for SOFCs despite the challenges posed by the high temperatures and delicate ceramic components. It has a higher specific gravity energy density than many hydrocarbons. When employing hydrocarbon fuels, state-of-the-art SOFC systems now attain a fuel efficiency of 50%, which is 40% greater than PEMFCs.
The SOFC fuel cell is constructed from anode and cathode electrodes that sandwich a solid oxide electrolyte. Its operating principle is based on semi-electroreactions occurring at the electrodes.
As mentioned before, a potential fuel for SOFCs is hydrogen, which has a higher gravimetric energy density than hydrocarbons, although its volumetric energy density at 800 bar is only a third that of petrol 2.
Hydrogen starvation in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) can be caused by swift variations in load demand, as well as large power fluctuations that result in an instant drop off of the voltage in the current–voltage (I–V) curve.

An SOFC fuel cell system that could yield an electrical output of around 200 kW is in operation at the site. In the field trial, the SOFC system is part of an integrated energy concept that combines electricity from a variety of renewable sources.
(ii) High total electrical conductivity (mixed ionic and electronic conductivity (MIEC)) (> 100 S/cm at ITs in air/O 2) to improve the electron charge transfer kinetics of the ORR and to extend the TPB.The conductivity of an SOFC cathode is measured using a 2 or 4-probe DC or AC technique [] using a ionic conducting probe such as Sm-doped CeO 2 and Y …
