However, biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), a state-of-the-art commercial capacitor dielectric, can work only below 105 °C. Here, we present a versatile method to enhance its working temperature by depositing alumina (Al 2 O 3) layers onto BOPP films via magnetron sputtering.
The experimental results showed that the highest energy density of BOPP–OBT@CPP–BOPP was up to 7.17 J cm −3 at 450 MV m −1 with 40 wt% OBT in the OBT@CPP layer, which was 2.6 times higher than that of BOPP. Besides, the charge–discharge efficiency remained as high as 81%.
Fig. 5 c illustrates that the dielectric loss of pure BOPP film experiences a significant increase of two orders of magnitude at around 105 °C as the temperature rises, but that of BOPP/COC films remained at a level of 10 -3 after 120 °C.
Compared with BOPP capacitor films, the dielectric properties of the all-organic composite film were significantly improved. Its discharge energy density was boosted to 5.07 J/cm 3 at 450 MV/m, 87 % higher than that of BOPP, with the charge–discharge efficiency as high as 82.5 %.
The working temperature of BOPP is always limited by 85 °C in application. We further evaluate the high-temperature performance of the coated films.
